PHOTOGRAPHING IN THE SNOW. DO IT RIGHT YOUR METER WILL NOT

PHOTOGRAPHING IN THE SNOW.  DO IT RIGHT – Your meter will not

There is a rule.  Not my rule.  I did not make it up.  Like so many before me and you and as there will be so many after you learn this rule to learn from you. the truth is in the telling.

Manually Compensate Your Metering  / Use Your exposure compensation dial to over expose the scene when shooting in the snow.

When you meter in the snow, you can almost guarantee that your metering will under expose. So what you will need to do is compensate by adding some exposure compensation on the plus side to get it right.  Here are some guide lines.

Snow and Weather Conditions

EV Compensation

Snow with clear sunny skies

+2 to 3 EV

Snow with slight overcast

+1 to 2 EV

Snow with overcast or in open shade

+2/3 to 1 EV
