Reality is disrupting the ideology of today’s Republican Party. For a generation, Republicans have tried to unravel the activist government under which Americans have lived since the 1930s, when Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt created a government that regulated business, provided a basic social safety net, and invested in infrastructure. My very close friend Pat C says:
“Instead, both Trump and Cruz want a payroll tax cut, which will do little to stimulate the economy since the tens of millions who have lost their jobs would not see any money, and this late in the year much of the tax has already been paid. But the payroll tax cut is popular among Republican ideologues because it funds Social Security and Medicare. Cut it, and those programs take a hit.
A payroll tax cut will do absolutely nothing but increase our deficit. Which is exactly what all of the other tax cuts have done. All the while helping the rich get richer. The Republican Party has devolved to a party of oligarchs and robber barons. It is no longer simply pro business, it has become anti-citizen. It is no longer the party of small government, it is now the party of big business, bought and sold buy the uber wealthy who are now controlling what you read and see. If we don’t rise up to defeat this in November, it will also control when and how it deploys military forces against its citizens like what we are seeing in Portland. Our democracy will not survive another four more years of this. Vote them out.”
